In 2002 we started a tradition of picking a student of the year from each class at the Cement Masons Apprenticeship. This has been a difficult process, with the number of good candidates we have. We try to base our selection on a number of criteria - first of all, adherence to their Standards of Apprenticeship, which includes class attendance and timely Work Progress Reports. This usually narrows the field of eligible apprentices. Next we look at their attitudes at class, as well as reports from the field, and in addition, participation at union meetings, upgrade classes, picket line duties, community service, etc. We vote secretly, and then compare and discuss our decisions. It's not easy and not perfect, as there are many good candidates, but in the end, we feel we have chosen those apprentices who represent the hard work and dedication of the group and let our members know that the future of Local 528 is in good hands. The 2009 Cement Mason Apprentice of the Year winners are First Year - Pat Adcock Second Year - Josh Detienne Third Year - Matt Jorgensen
Congratulations!!!
